Tibetan New Year
Festival (Losar) in Amdo
Day1. Arrive at Beijing. Jianguo Hotel
or other 4 star hotels.
Day2. Beijing--Xining
We fly to Xining (Alt: 2200m), capital city of Qinghai Province.
Afternoon, we visit Kumbum
Monastery. Overnight Qinghai hotel.
Day 3. Xining-Kokonor--Xining
Drive 150km via Sun and Moon Mountain Pass (Tib: Riwo Nyida, Alt:
3520m. Gate of the grassland and was once border of Tibet) to Kokonor
Lake. The reason I arrange Kokonor, because she presents fantastic
scenery in wintertime and it is not so cold. At this season, lake
surfaces are frozen from December to 5th or 10th of April every
year. If clients like, we can drive back through north road to Xining,
all round trip is 520km, Altitude is between 3200m to 3600m. 9 hours
driving including stops for photos and 2/3 is grassland view. Or
be prepared for some surprises, we can take a new and shorter high
way along the north east Lake through a large sand dunes area and
another beautiful valley back to Xining. Road condition is all good.

Day4. Xining--Tongren
In the morning we drive 70KM to Youning Monastery (Tib: Gonlong
Jampaling) built in 1604, now housing 400 monks. The third Dalai
Lama came here to give lectures of Buddhism in 1584 and requested
by the local people to build a monastery. The Fourth Dalai Lama,
a Great Mongolian, passed here on the way from Mongolia to Lhasa
in 1602. Then he sent a living Buddha from Lhasa to build a temple.
Before 1958 the monastery used have more than 7000 monks. The monastery
was specially built for the local Tu people, a very rare and small
nationality who honors their tribe is descendant of Mongolia army
settled here since 13th century, the Tu women wearing distinctly
colorful striped dresses can be seen in villages and speak their
own language but has no written language. So the masks dance by
lama artists here is different from other Tibetan areas. Afternoon
we drive 180KM to Tongren (Tib: Repkong) county, one of the most
important Tibetan Culture Centers in East-Tibet. As the place is
hidden in a mountain valley, it keeps its strong culture that it's
still un-known by outside world. We will stay here for three days
and each day with different activities by both monks and village
people. We stay in Tongren hotel. With clean room and hot water
for shower.

Day5 Visit Tongren
We drive 7Km to Guomar village to see Sunning of the Buddha. The
whole procession is exiting. As this great event happens only once
a year, all the villager are eager to prostrate in front of this
huge Tangkha, which 40m long and 30m wide.

Day6 Visit Tongren
Drive 5Km to Wutun monastery (Tub: Sengeshong Mago), a famous monk
art school set up in 16th century. Now has 120 monks, the youngest
is only 7 years old but they are so well trained be a artists in
this monastery. You can find their art works almost in whole Tibetan
area, such as paintings and sculptures. Masks dance by monk artists
here is wonderful. The main theme of the performances describes
all the Protector Deities how to kill the devil spirits, which made
by barley flower in a triangle box (Tib: Tukchuwa, meaning bad things
need to be thrown away). The best part is to see when monks burning
the devil things at the end of Dance in the field near the monastery.
You can not imagine how happy the whole village people is when seeing
Tukchuwa is burning and hundreds of village men let off countless
firecrackers together¡ At the moment in this atmosphere,
you can create a strong feeling of self-confidence towards New Year.

Day7 Visit Tongren
Drive 7Km to Guomar village again to see another different Masks
Dance by monks in Guomar monastery. The huge colorful Kalachakra
Pagoda providing a highlight view for beautiful Repkong valley.

Day8 Tongren--Labrang
Drive 4 hours through a very nice valley to Labrang monastery. The
valley looks like "Grand Canyon" but afterwards we will
drive into the beautiful grassland where we can see yaks and sheep
and visit Nomads families. Labrang monastery is one of six great
Gelukpa (Yellow hat sect) monasteries in Tibet, was founded in 1709,
housing more than 1500 monks. As Labrang and Kumbum(Tar si) are
considered most important institution of higher learning in East-Tibet,
during the New Year Festival time, here attracts thousands of Tibetan
people for pilgrimage, Lots of nomads come whole families for the
Festival from far away. Stay in overseas hotel and standard rooms
with hot water for shower. But we may change to another warmer hotel.

Day9 Visit Labrang
We see Sunning the Buddha; a large appliqu¨¦ Tangkha
(30 by 40m) is displayed on the mountain slop opposite the monastery.
We stay here for 4 days to see the Tibetan New Year Festival (Tib:
Losar), which is different from Tongren Festival, but both places
offer its own characteristic and every day we can enjoy something
new.

Day10 Visit Labrang
Masks Dance by the monks from Labrang Monastery is quite famous
among Tibetan and the monks are been trained for one year for this
occasion. In summer you can see them practicing the dance in monastery
or by the river band.

Day11 Visit Labrang
During the daytime, we visit the monastery and look around the big
free market all selling Tibetan things. You will meet lots of Tibetan
nomads at the market, as this is such good chance for them to buy
the things the need for the year together with family. In the evening
visit of the Butter Sculpture Show made by monk artists.

Day12 Labrang-Lanzhou
(Morning at Labrang after Lunch Drive to Lanzhou)
To see the procession of a Maitreya Buddha images around the monastery.
Maitreya Buddha is the future Buddha; people are doing prostration
in front of him to prey for bringing their lives again to the world
when he becomes Buddha after thousands of years.

Day13 Morning fly from Lanzhou to
Beijing.
Afternoon sightseeing or rest in Beijing.

Notes: The local temperature is usually
minus 8 or 10 degrees centigrade. But because the area we go to
is a sheltered mountain valley, it dose not feel as cold as you
